FACILITIES TECHNICIAN (Waste Water Treatment) - Evergreen Solar, Marlboro, MA

Evergreen Solar is recruiting for a Facilities Technician who is responsible for the Waste Water Treatment system and the DI water system operation, including routine on-site maintenance and emergency repairs of equipment in an R&D facility. MAINTENANCE MECHANIC - Hoosac Water Quality District, Williamstown, MA

 

DEFINITION:  This is a technical and skilled position requiring and involving the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and mechanical devices throughout the wastewater system.  Operation includes oversight and control of mechanical equipment as well as routine maintenance, servicing, and care of a variety of vehicles and equipment both in the distribution/collection system and at the wastewater treatment plant.  The Mechanic reports directly to the Assistant Chief Operator.  The position is classified as non-exempt for purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act, as having a possible occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens, and as Safety Sensitive; the employee is subject to a pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol testing.


EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:  

  1.  This position requires the use of hand tools, shop equipment and vehicles.
  2. The job involves work both indoors and outdoors, and the employee may be exposed to inclement weather, as well as biological, chemical, electrical and mechanical hazards.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  1. Checks status of various equipment in the plant, identifies mechanical problems, makes adjustments and repairs as needed, reports equipment status and condition to the Supervisor.
  2. Accurately enters data in logs and records, both manually and by computer keyboard.
  3. Performs or assists in the installation, maintenance, repair and overhaul of chemical feeders, compressors, pumps, valves, pneumatic and electrical controllers.
  4. Responds to plant alarms and takes corrective action.
  5. Calibrates and adjusts equipment and mechanical devices.
  6. Restarts equipment after an electrical outage.
  7. Reads and interprets charts and other recorders.
  8. Performs general cleanup activities.
  9. Reairs and maintains structures.
  10. Repairs and maintains vehicles.
  11. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  1. Must possess a diploma or GED from an accredited high school.
  2.  Must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts.
  3. Must be able to comprehend both oral and written instructions and to communicate both orally and in writing.
  4. Must be able to perform mathematical calculations with fractions, decimals, percentages and the metric system.
  5. Must have basic knowledge of computer programs (Excel, Word and Outlook) and be able to accurately perform manual and computer entry record keeping.

  14. Must have a good work ethic, including a willingness to perform job place tasks and to assist coworkers without redundant directive.

Job Description: Under the direction of the Chief Operator, the Waste Water Treatment Technician assists in the operation of the Water Purfication Plant as needed. This includes performing opening and closing tasks for the Waste Water Purfication Plant, checking the plant and observing conditions to determine that the plant is operating properly, cleaning the head works and cyclone de-gritter system, the laboratory and the belt press, collecting grab and composite samples, ability to PM and calibrate ph and DO probes, and receiving chemicals from chemical tankers to chemical tanks within the plant, receives wastewater delivered by outside venders and pumps or transfers into proper tankage.  Performs routine lab analyses as required.  Must be able to operate small amphidrome package plant, sample and complete monthly reports.  Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the facility.  Incumbent is required to fill in for the Chief Operator's absence.  As a member of HPWS, the incumbent is required to demonstrate leadership skills and participate on cross-functional teams to achieve organizational objectives.

INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS, GRADE 1-4 - TRIUMVIRATE ENVIRONMENTAL

Operate and maintain various industrial wastewater treatment systems, ranging from Industrial Grade 1 to Grade 4. These treatment systems are designed to remove heavy metals from wastewater discharges and are typically comprised of elementary pH and ORP adjustment, flow measurement, physical filtration, activated carbon, and ion exchange processes. Other key responsibilities include setup and collection of wastewater samples for analysis, and installation and service of silver recovery systems and components.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
•    Operate and maintain wastewater treatment systems and related equipment and components including, but not limited to, the following: Chemical metering pumps, centrifugal transfer pumps, “other” pump types; Calibrate and standardize pH and ORP probes and control loops; Maintain assorted filter types.
•    Calibrate and troubleshoot various flow measuring devices such as Sigma, ISCO, Foxboro, and other types of flow measuring devices.
•    Understand how to properly maintain various Programmable Logic Control Devices (PLCs).
•    Required to occasionally work long hours, weekends and holidays; and to be “on call”.
•    Maintain and complete daily log of all maintenance and routine operations at sites.
•    Collect industrial wastewater samples using ISCO and similar types and styles of automatic samplers.
•    Possess a working knowledge of pertinent wastewater regulations, as well as knowledge of effective installation of new equipment such as pumps, valves, flow meters, probes, and other system related equipment.
•    Participate in training personnel in the proper operation and maintenance of industrial wastewater treatment plants.
•    Possess the ability to assist in implementing system upgrades.
•    Provide technical assistance to our customers.

Upon completion of emergency response (ER) training, all Field Technicians will be on a rotating ER team; requirements include wearing pagers 24 hours a day during their ER week. This position is either part time for the operation of a Municipal RBC waste water treatment plant (7-10 hrs/week), or full time including WWT plus general maintenance for an apartment/office/shopping center complex.

Duties:
This is skilled work at the supervisory level in the operation, maintenance and control of the water Pollution control Facility and a VSS Water system. Administers and is in direct responsible charge of the facility during all working hours. Directly accountable to top management, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the MA Department of Environmental. Reviews and is responsible for the effective and efficient continuous operation of screening, grit removal, aeration, clarification, return and waste sludge pumping, filtration, disinfection, dechlorination, solids dewatering, and other wet-line and solids handling processes. Responsible for the work of operating staff and inmate work details in cooperation with Correctional Complex, and for adherence to security rules of the Complex by staff and inmates at all time. Prepares preventive maintenance schedules and supervises all operations including maintenance on equipment, buildings and grounds. Maintains the daily operations log and prepares monthly operational reports to the US EPA and the MA DEP. Responsible for inventory, requisition of supplies, and obtaining cost quotations. Recommends plans for improvements and modifications to the treatment plant. Assists in overseeing improvement/upgrade contracts to help ensure that the contract is carried out in such a way as to protect the best interests of the facility and Commonwealth. Attends relevant courses, seminars and meetings to keep updated in the latest practices, techniques and equipment relating to the field of water and wastewater treatment. Must exercise direct or indirect supervision over, assign work to, and review the performance of 1 of 5 technical personnel and inmates. May service equipment such as tractors, trucks, etc. by making repairs, lubrication, adjusting, cleaning, painting and other general upkeep to insure the safe and efficient operation of the equipment at the WPCF. Must be able to operate landscaping and general maintenance equipment stated above inorder that the grounds of the WPCF be properly maintained. Must be able to handle chemicals and chemical spills safety and dispose of residues properly. Must be skilled at compiling statistics for quarterly and annual reports. Responsible for training activities, instruction, demonstration to employees to ensure compliance with existing standards, and to keep employees updated on the latest techniques. WATER AND WASTEWATER OPERATOR – UPTON, MA

Town of Upton MA Position Title:   Water and Wastewater Operator  Statement of Duties:   Maintains water and sewer operating system for Town of Upton. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. 

1.      Operates, cleans, maintains and lubricates water booster stations, sewage pumping stations and wastewater treatment plant machinery, as well as water system equipment. This equipment includes, but is not limited to electric motors, controls, internal combustion engines, pumps, blowers and related and similar equipment. Maintains the requisite supply of various chemicals and verifies proper feed rates of chemicals being added to the water and sewer systems.

2.      Understands and remains current in the proper operation of the wastewater treatment plant, sewage pumping stations and the water source and distribution systems. Understands the treatment processes and the requirements for safe and efficient operation for both; insures the processes remain in control.

3.      When assigned, performs custodial duties and grounds maintenance. May be given snow removal assignments, requiring snow shoveling, snow and ice removal from sidewalks, steps, drives and pavements; and may be assigned to operate equipment used for snow plowing, snow removal, sanding and/or salting of streets, and clearing of sidewalks and parking areas.

4.      Position is a 24/7 position for on-call response during emergencies as called upon including, but not limited to, water breaks, sewer breaks and back ups, snow and ice emergencies, etc.

5.      Uses meters, detection equipment, air compressors, hammers, drills and other tools in the operation, maintenance and repair of the wastewater treatment facility, sewage pumping stations and the water source and distribution system stations and equipment.

6.      Assists in maintaining records of installation of and repairs to sewer mains, services and related equipment.

7.      Oversees contractors installing water and sewer mains, services, manholes, pumping stations, valves, fittings and related materials and equipment. Makes reports of any unauthorized changes to approved plans, or of any violations of the water and sewer departments’ policies, rules or regulations to the water/sewer supervisor.

8.      Assists other DPW divisions when assigned.

9.      Operates equipment such as air compressors, power mowers and pickup trucks.

Special Requirements

Grade 5C Wastewater, Distribution DI and Treatment TI, Water Backflow License, Hoisting License, CDL Class B. In order to be eligible for promotion and/or pass probationary period, employee must be fully licensed and show demonstrable skills, knowledge and mechanic aptitude as it pertains to systems for which employee is licensed and as it pertains to water break response and repair, pipe installation, pump repair, and general operations and maintenance of water and sewer systems including electric motors, controls, internal combustion engines, pumps, blowers, related similar equipment, handling chemicals, etc. 

When/if operating classification level of town owned sewerage treatment and water distribution facilities change, employees are required to obtain new levels of licensure and certification within a one year period as a condition of employment.

OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE (O&M) TECHNICIAN – MAYNARD, MA

Applicant will perform manual and technical work including the operation of equipment such as pumps, gates, valves, wastewater and sludge processing equipment and plant support systems.   Duties may also include grounds and building maintenance as directed. Applicant will operate light trucks, hydraulic equipment, gas monitors, and other tools and equipment. Applicant will also be responsible for repairing and maintaining machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools and production machines and equipment. Candidate must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and meet other physical demands as outlined in “Position Specific Components”.    

This is a Union Position, 40 hours per week with scheduled weekend duties on a rotational basis.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Applicant must possess a valid Class D Driver’s License, Class B is preferred, but not required, Hydraulic License Class 2B preferred, but not required, applicant will be encouraged to obtain with Towns assistance.  Wastewater Grade 2M License is desirable, but not necessary, must be able to obtain a Wastewater License within one (1) year
